FPC Applauds Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey Following Enactment of Permitless Carry

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (March 10, 2022) — Firearms Policy Coalition announced today that Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed House Bill 272, enacting permitless carry in the state. Alabama is now the 22nd state to enact permitless-carry legislation.

Under the new law, which takes effect in January 2023, any person, unless otherwise prohibited, will no longer need a permit to carry a handgun either open or concealed in the state of Alabama. Carry licenses will still be available to eligible individuals who wish to acquire a license for various purposes, such as compliance with federal law prohibiting firearm possession in school zones, 18 U.S.C. § 922(q)(2), or to benefit from reciprocity or recognition between states.

The legislation represents a historic achievement and pivotal moment in human liberty. It signifies a growing nationwide movement of the People demanding the free exercise of their natural right to keep and bear arms without a government permission slip. As we celebrate today’s news, FPC remains resolute in its commitment to fight for the expansion of permitless carry throughout the United States.

On behalf of our members and supporters, FPC thanks Gov. Ivey, H.B. 272’s sponsor Rep. Shane Stringer, and the numerous Alabama senators and representatives for leadership and commitment to enacting this important legislation.
